Some of you might not know this but fountain pen ink ISN'T waterproof. That's why there's a smudge in the upper left corner. Oh, it's not waterprroof because it would clog the pen. In the bottoom right, where the white is yoou can see yesterday's Hellboy drawing showing through the paper. That's what I get for not putting a peper between the pages when I scanned.
ALSO the diamond shape on the shield is derived from the WWII Army Air Force Flight Training Divisions wings. According to the sign at Arlington Cemetery the diamond shape was taken from Athen's shield. The AAFTD's mascot was Fifinella, drawn by none other than Walt Disney. Later on she'd evolve into Disney's gremlin.
Was watching Connections the other day and they had some really nice 1490s armor reenactments. It got me to run out a couple pages of sketches. Course nothing like throwing in a big angel wing to change the context.
Due to poor planning a chunk of this drawing is digital - done on a Wacom. Good practice. Not certain I'm ready for an all digital piece, but working on it.
I do enjoy playing with zip-a-tone, well my home made analog as it is.
I think the next step with this is a Xerox transfer. The end result of that is a translucent plastic sheet with the image on it. They're a mess to make, but are generally cool at the end.
And yet more to come. I kind of hate it when I start doodling something, it evolves, then runs out of paper because I didn't start at the right place in the sketch book.
You could say this means I should plan better, but I disagree. It's my sketch. The entire point is to be free. Otherwise you get all uptight and end up only ever drawing on napkins and envelopes because you're afraid of blank space.
