Cleopatra Records that is.

I went to see The 69 Eyes not too long ago. Pretty good show. The opener Dommin was surprisingly good. But I digress. I checked out the merch and as tempting as $50 for a signed drum head was I settled on the $5 limited edition, clear red vinyl, Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams seven inch. The on I received was 6/500, which I thought was pretty cool.

After the show I dropped it on top of my turntable and promptly ignored it for several weeks, until this morning.

Imagine my surprise when instead of Wrap Your Troubles pumping out, it's their cover of Blondie's Call Me. Ive a few other records (and CDs) that are screwed up. KMFDM's More & Faster/Naff Off 12" has the labels on the wrong sides. BitD whenever I requested Mire & Faster at clubs they, never fail, played Naff Off because they didn't know better.

But still, anentirely different song? That's kinda of a screw up. I looked up the album number CLP0003-1 , which means it's a Cleo releases. And we all know Cleo. "At Cleopatra Records quality isn't even in the top 10 of our concerns!"

Anywho I got a kick out of it so I thought I'd share.

Last night I found out my Dad's cousin, Nancy, was one of the first female Singing Sergeants. She said the men in the group were pretty down on having women in the group. Eventually they saw some benefits. For example when soldiers in remote Alaskan radar stations heard there were two women in the show, the Sergeants got a much higher turnout.

Still, she says it was great way to spend four years. This is an American Revolution Bicentennial, from 1976. Nancy is the principal soprano. FYI this is a 33MB zip file. America in Motion is the first track and is a medley with Peter Graves as the narrator. We Hold These Truths is Graves reading the words of Thomas Jefferson. The final track is The Battle Hymn of the Republic with soloist Sergeant Vernia Lewis.

Chatted briefly with the Dark Horizon folks about Stabbing Westward the other day - well last night - so I thought I'd dig out some vinyl for y'all. Yes I know it's been forever. I was into Stabbing Westward back in the early 90s. I still think Ungod is a great album. I don't know if I get with them being classified as a Metal band. Then what band is ever given a class they "belong" to?

So here we are with a remix of Lies, a single off that first album. Yes I chose it because it's the Hello Kitty remix. I'm simple like that.

Following up on yesterday's Sex Device (the band) post, I thought I'd share 4 more tracks. from the same era of the Cincinnati Gothic/Industrial music scene.

If you ever saw Sex Device, there's a good chance you saw them with Scream Bloody Murder. Usually in Cincy SD had top billing, in Dayton SBM got top. I should know I made it my business to see either band perform anywhere I could. That includes ABC on Short Vine. You remember ABC "American Bagel and Copy" The copy store that sold Bagels and had shows on a small stage at night? Of course you don't remember it, but I digress.

SBM are probably best remembered for the scantily clad back up singer/go-go girls tha always performed. Gary Thompson, the Andrew Eldritch looking front man, insists that it was the girls ideas to wear skimpy leather outfits. Still if you were into TKK, SBM were probably also up your alley.

Then there was Torture Garden. Honestly I don't know a ton about TG. If I recall correctly their one big gi was opening for Pigface at Bogarts. I heard their front man - the rabbit vest wearing, 6 foot tall 'n rail skinny - Abraham started chucking equipment into the audience and the band broke up that night. Again, if my music history serves me several members went on to form AMF - Audio Mind Fuck. AMF was kind of western industrial. Unfortunately I have no tapes of them.

So there you go, a little slice of my formative years and the brief, but bright, Cincinnati Industrial scene.

It's important to note Cincy was - strangely - pretty important musically in those days. The Afghan Wigs, Ass Ponys and Over the Rhine were all making a splash nationally. Bogarts was actually booking shows worth seeing. Short Vine was packed with record stores - Wizards, Wizard's Cave, Moles - and Sentiments/Rock City was the place to get your gear, and just shoot the breeze.

I'm well aware of my giving the past a glossier vernier than it may have had. But it's my youth and I can remember it how I want. So do yourself a favor, download these four MP3s and set you own way back machine for when you were 17 and you discovered THAT sound.

There is absolutely no secret to the fact I was a stupid-big Sex Device fan back in the early 90s. I think the first time I saw them live was at Warehouse, and I was totally blown away. They had a cross made of televisions that were being fed live from a roving camera. Janette - the lead singer - was in a fencing mask with vocoder, and later tried to the TVs. It was a spectacle as much as a concert.

They did all kinds of cool and crazy other cyber-trickery, maybe old hat now, that was new and cutting edge back then. At least to me anyway. Eventually Dave Scott, the bassist, got sick, and Dave and Janette got divorced, and the band disappeared.

While relatively short lived, Sex Device mad and indelible impression on me. I used to run into Dave and Janette round about Warehouse, and they were always cool, despite my being a massive cyber-fanboy.

Anywho I'm giving you folks a chance to enjoy some of my dyed in the PVC, Cyberpunk fun. I've ripped the Brand New World album and Dissect the Mind and Contact EPs and stuck them up on rapidshare for your enjoyment. FYI these are ripped from ANCIENT, well over-played cassettes; so the sound isn't pristine. But then again what's nostalgia without the tape hiss?

I freely admit picked up this album just for the cover art. I'm a big Paul Pope fan. I planned on bringing this home, dropping it into a frame and putting it on my wall.

On recommendation from my brother-in-;aw, a John Spencer fan, I listened to it first. And you know what? It's great? There's a wonderful garage rock/rockabilly sound. I'm posting two tracks "Under the Waves" which is a classic love ending in murder tune, think Johnny Cash or Nick Cave. the second track - represented by the b-side cover - is "The Hump". I ripped it by accident, so I thought I'd just toss it up to give y'all a little bonus.

So we all know that Generation X was Billy Idol's band before going solo. GenX released two full lengths before splitting up, but they recorded a third KMD - Sweet Revenge (Technically it's 2 albums 1979's Sweet Revenge and 1981's Kiss me Deadly). Over Christmas I picked the album up on a very weighty slap of vinyl from a joint out of Spain called Munster Records.

What can I say? GenX are considered by some a more mainstream version of the punk ethos, but all good fun nonetheless. Whatever. Here's Psycho Beat for your aural enjoyment.

Finished alphabetizing all the vinyl I brought back from my parents. Tucked in there was this. Star Wars: Rebel Mission to Ord Mantell. This takes place just before Empire. Matter of fact Han references Ord Mantell in one of the early Hoth scenes. However. According to Wookiepedia this isn't cannon as some comics and a novel also talk about Han on Ord Mantell.

I'm pretty impressed that at 26 years old this record is in as good shape as it is. That said there is some surface noise on side B. Just think of it as aural nostalgia.

Never been a huge Clock DVA fan, but they were on Wax Trax, so I own a bunch. Best known for The Hacker - on The Black Box - today we have The Act b/w The Sonology of Sex. Had to look up "sonology." It's a neologism for the study of sound. I picked this up from the 99 cent, cut out QUALITY Bin on a visit to Wax Trax back round 90//91

Some of you might dig this, and now that I've ripped it I can file it away on the shelf and forget about it for another 15 years.

I was cleaning last night and started working through some of the vinyl I dug up at my parent's house. Iripped a bunch of them and decided to share. Mix of EBM, Industrial, grunge and house... maybe?

As always right click and "save link as" to download.

Ajax - Mind The Gap
It goes for $3 - $7. Probably worth closer to $3. I always equate Ajax with The Weathermen. Give them both a listen and you'll see why.

Schnitt Acht - Rage / Random Funk (12", Red) current 9 euro on discogs

Schnitt Acht - Grouch $20 on discogs

Listening to Schnitt Acht's Grouch I think a ton of modern industrial bands should rethink what they're doing. Cause it was done by this forgotten band 18 years ago.

Sonic Youth - Disappearer (white label promo)
OK, on eBay, this is going for $7 for the regular promo and $300 for an autographed promo. Discogs has a non-promo version listing for 50 euro! I got it free at Culture 7. So whatever it's real world value, its worth automatically worth more than I paid for it.

Candy Flip - Strawberry Fields
. The A side is utterly worthless and the B-side is only half interesting for the DMC-UK remix, which I'm posting here. So it's pointless to give this a monetary value. As far as I know I'm the only person of the Sincy contingent that still owns this. And there's a good reason for that.

The Weathermen - Heatseeker
. I always thought this was a Wax Trax disc, but it's Play It Again Sam. Which back in 1990, was just as good as being a Wax Trax piece. It's fun Belgian EBM. Probabl worthless, but I enjoy it.

Now let's talk about The Dildos shall we?

The Armageddon Dildos
are a band I had never heard of, Zoth Ommog a label I had never heard of. But when you see The Armageddon Dildos - Homicidal Maniac, hanging their on the wall you don't ask any questions. You give the drag queen behind the counter your $7 and go home and put it on every mix tape you can.
